{"id":4363,"date":"2018-09-21T15:06:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T15:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hacan.org.uk\/?p=4363"},"modified":"2018-09-21T15:06:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T15:06:40","slug":"3rd-runway-will-mean-torrents-of-noise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hacan.org.uk\/?p=4363","title":{"rendered":"3rd Runway will mean &#8216;torrents of noise&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><b>PRESS RELEASE<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>25\/6\/18 for immediate use<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>VOTE TO BACK THIRD RUNWAY WILL MEAN \u2018TORRENTS OF NOISE\u2019 FOR COUNTLESS COMMUNITIES<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Campaigners claimed that today\u2019s vote to back a third runway will cause countless communities to experience \u2018torrents of noise\u2019 for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>John Stewart, chair of HACAN, the long-established residents\u2019 group which has campaigned against a new runway at Heathrow for 15 years, said, \u201cA third runway will turn peaceful areas of London and the Home Counties into torrents of noise as planes pass over at a rate of one every 90 seconds.\u00a0\u00a0 Up to 100,000 people could experience relentless noise for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stewart added, \u201cOf course the new runway is not a done deal.\u00a0 This vote simply permits Heathrow to draw up detailed plans which in due course will need to be approved by a planning inquiry before construction can start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s vote in Parliament means that a third runway becomes official Government policy.\u00a0 The Prime Minister secured a majority of 296.\u00a0 415 MPs backed a new runway, with 119 against.<\/p>\n<p>A number of local authorities, backed by Greenpeace and the Mayor of London, indicated last week that they would mount a legal challenge against any vote in favour of a new runway.\u00a0 It is expected the courts will hear their case in the autumn.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next year Heathrow will draw up and consult on its plans for the third runway with a view to presenting them to a public inquiry in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart said, \u201cAlthough HACAN believes a third runway is not the right answer we will engage in the consultation process in order to fight for the best deal for residents should a third runway go ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>ENDS<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>For further information:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">John Stewart on 0207 737 6641 or 07957385650<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PRESS RELEASE \u00a025\/6\/18 for immediate use VOTE TO BACK THIRD RUNWAY WILL MEAN \u2018TORRENTS OF NOISE\u2019 FOR COUNTLESS COMMUNITIES Campaigners claimed that today\u2019s vote to back a third runway will cause countless communities to experience \u2018torrents of noise\u2019 for the first time.
