Kew<\/strong> Gardens<\/strong>\nStays Silent on Heathrow Expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

at a time key BAA and BA figures play a leading role\nin its management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressure Group HACAN ClearSkies has revealed that\nleading figures from BAA, the owner of Heathrow Airport, and British Airways\nhave got themselves key roles in the management of Kew Gardens, the\nworld-famous Royal Botanic Gardens which lie directly under the flight path,\njust months before the Government is due to reveal its plans for a big increase\nof flights over the Gardens.  Marcus\nAgius, the Chairman of BAA, has a key fundraising role for Kew\nas the Chairman of the Foundation and Friends of Kew.  Andrew Cahn, the Director of Government and\nIndustry Affairs at British Airways, sits on Kew\u2019s\nBoard of Trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kew Gardens has consistently refused to speak out\nagainst the expansion of Heathrow.  If\nthe Government goes ahead with plans to abolish runway alternation, Kew Gardens\ncould be under the flight path all day long. \nThe Department for Transport is expected to consult on its plans in\nMarch next year (1).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The role of the Foundation and Friends of Kew (2)<\/strong> is \u201cto provide support for Kew by\nraising funds for Kew\u2019s activities\u201d, according to the Kew Garden\u2019s\nannual report.  The report admits that\n\u201cfinancial support through bequests from Friends is becoming an increasingly\nimportant source of income.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HACAN Chair John Stewart said, \u201cWe are very suspicious\nabout the motives of Marcus Agius and Andrew Cahn.  Have they wormed themselves into key\npositions in order to make sure that Kew\n Gardens is not critical\nof plans to expand Heathrow?  Certainly,\nlocal people are in despair about Kew\u2019s\nrefusal to speak out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(1).<\/strong>  At\npresent aircraft landing over West London use one runway until 3pm before\nswitching to the other one in order to give people some relief from the\nnoise.  Kew Gardens\nbenefits from this.  But the Department\nfor Transport is expected put out proposals to public consultation in March\n2006 to end runway alternation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(2).<\/strong>  The\nKew Gardens 2005 Annual Report describes the Foundation and Friends thus: \u201cThe\nFoundation and Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew,\nis a registered charity (registration no. 803428) which is independently\nadministered.  Its purpose is to provide\nsupport for Kew by raising funds for Kew\u2019s\nactivities.\u201d  Its membership exceeds\n64,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
